Registered Agent vs Employer

The very first step when it comes to setting up STP is for you as a client to understand how you are operating.

Are you:

  • Running your own payroll and lodging - an employer or authorised employee carrying out processing of pay and lodging data to the ATO, or
  • Managing payroll for your clients - a registered agent carrying out processing of pay and lodging data to the ATO

The way you are operating dictates:

  • How you are set up in the application
  • The declaration message shown on finalising pay runs
  • The information that is captured in the employer file (CSV and XML)
  • How the AMS4 header is packaged and sent to ATO
  • Whether a person is required to authorise the pay run or not

The type of service Datacom is currently providing you dictates the way we set you up in the application. If you are a business looking after your own payroll, then the STP role should be set as Business. If your payroll is outsourced to a company using Datacom Payroll software then the STP role should be set to Tax Agent.
